What is Yoga for Back Care?

Yoga for Back Care is a simple and accessible yoga practice for people of all ages and abilities. Its aim is to improve the health of the spine and maintain strength, flexibility, balance and mobility for optimal well-being both on and off the mat.

In a Yoga for Back Care class you will:

  • learn how to modify poses and use props to adapt the practice to suit your body

  • find out more about your spine, its anatomy and function, and how it interacts with your whole body

  • explore optimal alignment for your postural health

  • ensure you always work within your pain-free range of movement

  • learn breathwork and simple relaxation techniques to release physical and mental tension that can contribute to back pain

I trained in Yoga for Back Care with the osteopath-led BackCare Foundation because I have experienced lower back pain on and off over the years and I want to practise and teach yoga in a way that takes care of our bodies rather than exacerbating any pain. As well as teaching practical, accessible yoga techniques Yoga for Back Care practice teaches us about mindfulness and acceptance of the natural aging process and how to work realistically with our bodies in a healthy, functional way. Yoga for Back Care Workshop - ‘Demystifying the Core’

Join Rachael and osteopath Matt Parry-Jones (Pavilion Osteopathy) for an afternoon of experiential learning about your core, and why it is such an integral component of your overall health, yoga practice and movement in general.

In this practical workshop we will explore what we mean by ‘the core’, learn exercises to improve core awareness and integration in all movement, and finish with a yoga practice that incorporates all that you will have learnt. We will also cover the relationship of the core to posture, breath, injury prevention and lower back pain.

Rachael and Matt are both passionate about promoting safe and supportive movement patterns for healthy, easeful movement both on and off the yoga mat and love combining their skills to present these Yoga for Back Care Workshops together.
